Lady Buckingham’s voice was calm, yet her words sent my mind into a tailspin. Looking around the conference room, my gaze met King Theodore’s. “It’s Lucille. I need to go to the infirmary.”

Placing his hands on the table, the king stood. “Is she all right?”

I was too distraught to think much about the way his left hand trembled. Emotions choked my response. “I don’t know.”

“The baby?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

“Hurry, son. Let her know we’re praying.”

The additional eyes and ears in the room didn’t register. Whether I’d received the king’s permission or not, I planned to bolt from the room. With his permission, as the guard opened the door, I took off as if my life depended upon it. It wasn’t my life I was concerned about. With so much at stake, it was too easy to lose sight of the biggest concern—the health and well-being of Lucille’s and my child.

“Your Highness,” Lord Martin called as I fled the maze of offices and meeting rooms.

Heads bowed and respectful greetings were given as I literally broke into a jog. With each step, each clip of my shoes on the marble tiles, I prepared myself for the worst, for news of a miscarriage.

In the minutes it took to navigate the palace corridors, I went through the five stages of grief.

Denial.

Anger.

Bargaining.

Depression.

Acceptance.

There was another one, one that overcast all the others.

Guilt.

This was my fault.

I was to blame.

If only we hadn’t made love last night.

That final unrecognized stage caused me to double over, my breathing heavy, as I approached the infirmary. Moving to the wall, I listened to the buzz as a cyclone of thoughts nearly brought me to my knees.

Regroup, Roman.

Yes, I was referring to myself by that name. I couldn’t pinpoint the moment it happened, but it had happened. Now I needed to remember who I was.

No matter what I’d find beyond the doors, I would be strong for Lucille.

An unimaginable thought came to mind.

Lucille.

We could survive the loss of the pregnancy and try for more.

I couldn’t and wouldn’t survive the loss of my princess.

Molave meant nothing without her.

“Your Highness,” Lord Martin said, panting. “What is happening?”

Standing tall, I met my assistant’s gaze. “Lucille.”

“The baby?”

With a stiff upper lip and clenched jaw, I nodded. “I don’t know more.” I looked toward the doors. “The answer is in there.”

“If I may…?”

I had neither the energy nor the inclination to listen to my assistant’s advice regarding Lucille.

However, before I could gather my thoughts into words, Lord Martin clasped his hands in front of him and spoke softly. “You care for her. No matter what you learn, make certain she knows that.”

Swallowing, I nodded, straightened my shoulders, and entered the infirmary.

If I’d expected chaos behind the doors, I was pleasantly disappointed. There weren’t medical personnel rushing through the hallways pushing Lucille on a stretcher or wheeling monitors from here to there. No one was shouting orders and no alarms were blaring as was common on medical dramas.

The nurse behind the desk stood and bowed her head.
